Essay / Theseus or Hercules? - 488
Theseus or Hercules? Theseus is the most worthy of emulation. He was a great hero in Athens. “Theseus was, of course, the bravest of the brave, like all heroes, but unlike other heroes, he was as compassionate as he was courageous. » (p. 159). Theseus was also a courageous, intelligent and physically strong man. Hercules, on the other hand, was what all of Greece, with the exception of Athens, admired the most. He was very strong but not too smart. Hercules never thought about the consequences his actions would bring before putting them into practice. First, Theseus was very strong. He has fought many terrible and horrible monsters such as the Minotaur, "...a monster, half bull, half human..." (p.151), and embarked on many great undertakings such as the Quest of the Golden Fleece. Theseus showed his great strength in adventures like that of the Minotaur. Hercules was also involved in many great adventures in which his great strength was manifested. Hercules was much stronger than Theseus, but Theseus made up for this small loss in other ways. Second, Theseus was very intelligent. Because of his great intelligence, the Athenians, people who valued thought and ideas, chose him as their hero, not Hercules. Theseus escaped from the Labyrinth and killed the Minotaur. None of these tasks were easy and required someone with aptitude unlike Hercules. Theseus always thought things through and made good decisions. Hercules' madness manifested itself on several occasions, such as when he killed his family and his music teacher. Theseus' intellect is a very valuable quality that makes him more worthy of imitation. Third, Theseus was very courageous. In fact, he made so many grand excursions that a saying spread in Athens: “Nothing without Theseus!” (p. 149). When it was time for Theseus to look for his father, he did not want to take the water "But Theseus refused to go by water because the journey was safe and easy" (p. 149). Theseus insisted on taking the route by land. His idea was to become a hero as quickly as possible, and he achieved this by ridding the country of all the bans of travelers on their way to find his father. Theseus had many other adventures. He was on the Argo, in the Caledonian hunt, as well as many others. Hercules also had many adventures, but his were often the result of his own..
