  • Essay / Compare death, don't be proud and because I couldn't stop...

At the beginning of the poem it says "Death, don't be proud, even though some called you/ Powerful and fearsome, for thou art not” (Lines 1-2) Donne states that death is portrayed as something very powerful and even fearful, but he strongly disagrees with this. Later in the poem, Donne compares death to sleep, something no one fears, stating, "A short sleep past, we wake eternally" (line 13). “Death brings greater liberation and pleasure than rest and sleep, which people use to restore their energy” (Philip), “The poet compares death not to a wild desecration, nor to a final battle and fatal, but rather a prolongation of any easy rest. » (Schaper). In my opinion, this was one of the most degrading lines Donne used in the poem, taking away all the dead.
