The Effects of Environmental Factors on Birth OrderAlfred Adler, a psychoanalyst, believes that birth order greatly affects our personality. More recent research on individuals' particular birth order shares ideas about the effects of biology and psychology on a person. It can actually predict health consequences. Firstborns tend to be born leaders, rather than achievers and perfectionists. They also seek to be the center of attention and feel more pressure to be the best. Studies have shown that firstborns also have higher IQs than their younger siblings, putting them above average. Since firstborns are naturally leaders, it is not surprising to see that many of our presidents were born first in their families. Unfortunately, firstborns are at greater risk for high blood pressure due to pressure and fear of failure. They experience increased stress which causes high blood pressure and can in turn put them at risk of cardiovascular disease in later years. Another interesting environmental factor that plays into firstborns is that these health problems can begin in the womb. During a first pregnancy, the placenta does not function as well. Therefore, when essential nutrients are not provided, it negatively affects the development of the fetus. Middle children tend to be more peacemakers. They also strive to please people, have good listening skills, and can negotiate well. Sometimes, they are known to be manipulative in order to achieve their ends. They often feel excluded and isolated because they are the most forgotten.
