The Revival in 19th Century America was primarily driven by the establishment of churches with the separation of styles denoting religious denominations. Thanks in part to the Picturesque movement of the 19th century, the Gothic Revival style quickly became a nationalist movement. Best known for his neo-Gothic churches, Richard Upjohn quickly became a leader of the picturesque style; particularly visible in his most notable work, the Trinity Church in New York. Similarly, HH Richardson applied his own style to his Trinity Church located in Boston. Both Upjohn and Richardson were influenced by the architectural styles that preceded them. These styles laid the foundation for their design aesthetic; as well as reasoning, making them influential in religious communities throughout the architectural scene that was happening in the United States at the time. Upjohn's essays dealing with the Romanesque style were part of the movement that paved the way for Richardson. Bold and generously serene, his designs for villas and houses were a premature struggle for functional expression in the picturesque; further contributing to the development of HH Richardson and Louis Sullivan. Upjohn possessed many aspects that were unified by Richardson and further developed in many of the early works of modernism. Upjohn's influence for the design of his Trinity Church came from the ecclesiological movement, which supported "authentic" medieval forms. His work incorporated many ecclesiological principles regarding church form, plan, and orientation; which included: emphasis on the choir and altar; use of natural and honest materials; and a general approach to the spirit of medieval English churches.
