The main components of the human cardiovascular system include the heart and blood vessels. The heart beats to pump blood to the vessels responsible for circulating it to the body's cellular tissues. During the process of homeostasis, the circulatory system supplies oxygen and nutrients to the cell while removing waste products from tissue fluid, such as carbon dioxide present in the lungs. This process is necessary for cellular functioning. Each beat of the heart is called a cardiac cycle. When the heart beats, the atria contract simultaneously, followed by the ventricles, this process is called systole. The resting phase of the four chambers between beats is called diastole. On average, a healthy adult's heart rate is 70 beats per minute with an average resting heart rate of 60 to 80 BPM.
