  • Essay / Typography - 911

One of the most important aspects of graphic design is typography. Typography plays a huge role not only in its basic function of communication, but also as a visual design element that can easily make or break a piece. Knowing this, I strive to be very strong typographically. An artist I draw inspiration from typographically is Michael Bierut, who is amazing at typography. Bierut graduated from the Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning in 1980. After graduation, he continued to work for Vignelli Associates. During his ten years at Vignelli, he ended up as vice president of graphic design. Bierut then moved to Pentagram's New York office, where he remains to this day. He has worked with Pentagram's huge clients, ranging from museums to sports teams to the Walt Disney Company and beyond. Bierut has also received numerous awards, including the coveted AIGA (Pentagram) medal. Although I am not yet at liberty to compare my young breeding career with Bierut's and his chart veteran status, there are similarities. First of all, Bierut is a senior graphic design critic at the Yale School of Art. I would also like to work at a university at some point in my career. Additionally, Bierut has worked with some large and graphically impressive clients. I would love to work for clients such as the Walt Disney Company or a professional sports team. His works are also part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. A piece in the permanent collection of a museum such as MoMA would be a huge goal achieved in my career. If one were to take a look at a selection of works from Bierut's career, wonderful typography would undoubtedly be a constant discovery. As in re-branding...... middle of paper ...... very good in Bierut's posters at Yale, but I certainly chose a different method. Socially, these pieces differ. The social aspect certainly has many similarities, but fundamentally they are different. Bierut's posters are pure promotion. My article supports the idea of diversity among designers. As for physical discontinuities, they are present in the intended print. Bierut's posters must be printed and plastered on all walls at Yale. My article is printed for insertion in a magazine, preferably held by the reader. Ultimately, these articles are very similar. This suits me completely, being compared to a winner of the most prestigious medal in graphic design. I often look to Bierut for inspiration and am aware that this is reflected in my work. Everyone has to have someone to look up to and Michael Bierut is definitely one of them for me..
