GKN Aerospace has been a place of employment for me as an electrician for fifteen years. GKN's activity is the design and manufacture of composite and metal aerodynamic structures. These aerodynamic structures are then sold to a wide range of companies. Some of GKN's customers include Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Airbus and many others. Aeronautical structures are built and designed for use in military and commercial aircraft, aircraft engines, guided missiles and space vehicles. GKN Aerospace has been in business for over a hundred years. During this time, not only has the manufacturing process changed, but so has the knowledge and attention paid to the pollution and contaminants produced by this manufacturing. Some of the pollutants produced by GKN Aerospace come from the use of solvents and degreasers. , paint spraying, spent fuel disposal and chemical grinding. GKN is aware of these pollutants and has taken steps to reduce the impact of these pollutants on the environment and its workforce. One way they've done this is through help from the Missouri State Department of Natural Resources and the Occupational Safety and Health Association, also known as OSHA. One of GKN's most recent safety and health improvements is the regulation of chromium. Where GKN uses chrome is in its paint booths, cleaning and priming lines and chemical processing areas. Additionally, chromium is released in areas where primed parts are sanded, grinded or drilled. Many areas offer products containing chromium, but do not use them in large quantities. (Chrome will be referred to as Chrome for the rest of the paper.) GKN uses chrome in its paints and primers because it has excellent anti-corrosion properties. .... middle of paper ...... where large quantities of chromium-containing materials are present or applied, will have more stringent requirements for personal protective equipment. These areas will also be restricted to trained and authorized personnel only. For dust containing chromium, dust masks are very effective. Employees working in paint shops, chemical processing or in clean and well-maintained areas now need respiratory protection. GKN employees, working in chrome-regulated areas, participated in briefings and brainstorming sessions.
