    The Chichimecas Wars played a major role in the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs. The wars or mini-battles between the two sides occurred between 1550 and 1590, when much of the new colony of Mexico was already established. The Spanish ended up engaging in the longest and costliest conflict they had ever had with an indigenous people. The Chichimeca people were a group of nomadic people who lived in a desert basin of approximately 60,000 square miles of land, where they hunted and gathered. Nor were they a single tribe; The tribesmen were made up of four different ethnic tribes who sometimes joined in battle. The wars began after the lands in which the tribe lived were found to be abundant in silver ore and led the Spanish to establish mines in the Chichimecas' territory. This upset the tribe and they began attacking Spanish convoys that were on their way to deliver supplies to the mines and miners. The Spanish then appealed to their native allies by setting up forts along the roads with soldiers and Native American allies to help protect convoys traveling through Chichimecan territory. The Spanish government then adopted a policy of "War with Fire and Blood" which meant death and slavery, as well as the mutilation of the Chichimeca people. The policy had no effect and failed. Instead, they decided that making peace with the natives was a better option. A bishop proposed a Christian remedy to the problem: convert the Chichimecan people to Christianity.
