Essay / The Benefits of Family Farming - 1367
Imagine a farm with an abundance of animals and crops. The farm that comes to mind most is not one of giant machinery and pollution smokestacks, but a vision of the old red barn and cows grazing freely. Unfortunately, these types of farms have mostly disappeared in the United States. These “family farms” are being replaced every day by larger, more industrialized farms. It is sad to see such a vital part of American culture being taken away by a type of farm used solely for economic purposes. Family farming is gradually disappearing from the American landscape. As Americans, we need to realize the importance of family farming because it produces high-quality food and helps the local community economically. Family farming has been around as long as agriculture has existed in the United States. There are two types of farms: family farms and factory farms. Family farms are usually passed down from generation to generation and there were several thousand across the country. These farms do not have to belong to just one family either. Sometimes the farm is owned only by a small group of community members. However, the concept remains the same. But lately they have been replaced by larger, more industrialized farms. These farms, also called industrial farms and collective farms, are actually owned by large companies and are used for purely economic purposes. Companies don't care about the quality of the crop or who gets it. They just want to make as much money as possible. In contrast, family farms actually help a wide variety of people. Not only do family farms help produce food for the family that cares for them, but they also produce food for local markets, keeping them healthy...... middle of paper......a “natural pesticide” against, in this situation, wheat, the virus that kills crops. This is the advantage of family farms. Family farms are gradually disappearing from the American landscape due to the growing number of industrialized farms. Yet the family farm brings so many benefits to the community that it would be foolish to let them slip away. As Americans, we must do everything we can to support family farmers because they help the community in so many ways. From fresh local produce to helping keep our land free of chemicals and insecticides, these are just some of the tasks they do to help everyone. Without them, the United States will become a country where only a few farmers farm, and those who do do so for economic reasons. America needs farmers who farm not only for themselves but for the entire community..
