  • Essay / NASA Spending Essay - 1196

This essay is written to prove that NASA spending has a negative impact on American society. The continuation of NASA's programs and the programs it manages is detrimental to American society and the American government. NASA hurts the economy. NASA is also harming the environment we live in. And the money NASA spends could be used to help solve our country's problems, not those of another planet. NASA hurts the economy. Since NASA's founding in 1958, NASA has spent more than $500 billion (NFAA). To put this into perspective, if you add up the total amount NASA has spent SINCE the moon landing, that's enough money to buy the entire continent of Oceania AND end world hunger for over 6 years. NASA is constantly disrupting the United States treasury by constantly spending money that doesn't belong to them, which increases taxes. NASA is consistently over budget and behind schedule. So how poorly managed is NASA? A U.S. government report says more than 50 percent of NASA programs are over budget and on schedule; and some others have no deadline. The Government Accountability Office examined 18 separate NASA programs and found that 5 of them are operating without any deadline! In total, only 3 met their deadline, and all were over budget. The Mars Science Laboratory is 25 months behind schedule and 26% over original cost estimates, and the Glory climate satellite is an incredible 53% over budget! (nasa). This constant overrun of NASA's budget translates into higher taxes for the American people. Many NASA programs had to be canceled due to extensive corruption. $9 billion was wasted due to corrupt management and spending on the Constellation (NFAA) program. Corruption in the United States Congress is disastrous... middle of paper ... with each other before we even think about expanding into space. For example, the United States must learn to communicate and improve relations with Russia before attempting to conquer space. We must resolve the problems we have in our homeland and on our home world, before we create new ones on another planet. In conclusion, the continuation of NASA and the programs it operates is detrimental to American society and government. NASA hurts the economy. NASA is also harming the environment we live in. And the money spent by NASA could be used to help solve problems in our country and not on another planet. Only if we work together, solving our own problems first, with respect for each other, as one body, one world and one planet, can we then reach space. We will be able to explore it safely, efficiently and with respect for the environment..
