  • Essay / Technology in the Classroom - 1758

Certainly, technology has always had an impact on students and teachers in the classroom. Guttenberg's invention of the printing press in 1451 brought the printed word to the masses and made learning more accessible to the common man. The introduction of the pocket calculator in the 1970s freed professionals and students from the slide rule and made learning and performing mathematical calculations much less time consuming. Fast forward to today and the technological opportunities are mind-blowing. Today's students carry cell phones that are much more powerful and smaller than most early computers! Too often, many of these technologies—cell phones, personal music, and portable video game systems—are seen as distractions in the classroom. However, there is an advantage; There are many technologies that can have a significant impact on the educational experiences of all students. Information is now available in new and exciting ways. New technologies such as smart boards, the Internet and e-books allow students to access, interact and carry information with them in new and exciting ways and, despite obstacles such as cost, training and resistance to pedagogical changes, can impact students' learning experiences in a multitude of new and positive ways. Smartboards A relatively new technology introduced into the classroom is the smartboard. Part whiteboard, part touchscreen computer, the Smart Board is an interactive multimedia device that allows manipulation of on-screen programs that can directly improve student learning. Unlike previous tools such as whiteboards, projectors and computers, the Smart Board combines the best of each and provides education to the medium of paper that textbook publishers deliberately hold back from converting to more traditional tools. from textbooks to e-books due to concerns over rights management and fear that e-book sales would diminish their profits and the used textbook market (Woudstra, 2003). Despite these problems, it is clear that e-books offer students a great advantage over traditional textbooks. Adopting new technology is never easy and adjusting educational pedagogy is also often difficult. The current addition of new technologies including smart boards, internet and e-books are the current technologies influencing the classroom today. Although they can often be expensive, the benefits they bring to students have been clearly seen. These technologies help create a more dynamic and convenient school environment that engages today's students..
