A director of nursing in a hospital organization is the head of all nurses employed in the healthcare facility. He or she is appointed by the administrative body or a group of shareholders of the agency in accordance with the criteria set forth by the policies of the organization as well as in compliance with the nursing law enforced in the state or the place. Through their education and management experience, a registered nurse is assigned an administrative position in which they can facilitate the implementation of the organization's mission and vision to its staff. The director of nursing also works with the medical director in terms of implementing policies and procedures which involves collaboration between a nurse and other members of health care. He or she participates in the planning phase of the entire organization. The director of nursing may be called as head nurse. Under his supervision, the nurses have a representative in the administration. Since nurses make up the largest portion of healthcare personnel employed in a healthcare facility, they deserve to have a well-motivated leader and mentor in the person of a nursing director. In addition to administrative authority, the nursing director also monitors the flow of supplies used in each unit. He is also present during product presentations to facilitate the correct choice of technology to be used in each unit of the hospital in order to provide safe and effective nursing care to all patients. An aspiring registered nurse must be prepared both educationally and technically in order to assume all the responsibilities of a director of nursing in the future.
