Description of a female figurine from the Cyclades The Cycladic civilization is divided into three periods: the ancient Cyclades (3000-2000 BC), the middle Cyclades (2000-1500 BC) and the upper Cyclades (1500-1100 BC). The large quantity of white marble sculptures located in the Cyclades islands, notably in Naxos and Paros, a place exclusively composed of female figures with crossed arms. These impressive marbles seem to be a symbol of Cycladic art. These figures are the best known and most appreciated productions of Cycladic art. Most Cycladic figures represent naked women with crossed arms. These figures are usually found in burial areas and were probably associated with funerary rites, but some larger ones probably came from settlements or sanctuaries. Many items such as jewelry, marble, pottery and figures (male and female) have been discovered. The example below (Fig.1) is a female figurine from the Bronze Age (2900-2200 BC) in the Cyclades region, a region between Greece and Turkey. The Cyclades are an area made up of thirty-one islands. This standing figure is an example of the Spedos variety, named after a famous cemetery on the island of Naxos. The figure has a triangular lyre-shaped head and its size is quite large, approximately 67.6 cm. Few other facial details like eyes and mouth were sculpted. The main features of this figure are the arms crossed to the left on the stomach. The leg of this figurine is slightly bent and the knee is spread. More importantly, the feet are too small to support the entire figure. The toes also point downward. Although the facial features are not detailed, there are double rows of red dots on both tiles, the nose and the forehead, creating...... middle of paper ...... the works art were generally influenced by Minoan culture. Due to the earthquake, Ayia Irini, one of the main settlements on Kea, was being destroyed. Along with the Mycenaean invasion, this also causes the fall of a city called Phylakopi. After the natural disaster and invasion, these two cities were being rebuilt. For artwork, Mycenaean pottery replaced most local products and became popular (John 309).V. ConclusionThe Cycladic civilization dominated the Aegean region for about 1200 years, this civilization to some extent had a great influence on later periods like the Greek period. Among all the works of art, the most attractive product was the marble female figurine. Although the function remains unknown, the simplicity and geometric style of these figurines become a distinctive mark of the Cycladic civilization (Cycladic).
