Essay / The Effects of Drinking and Driving - 1411
There are many reasons why people drink and drive. Many people drive under the influence all the time. Drivers have a responsibility when driving drunk. Drunk driving is a problem in the United States today. People need to be aware of the impact it has on them and understand that drunk driving is a problem and needs to be stopped. Why not ban alcohol? If it was illegal to drink, there would be fewer drunk drivers. One of the common consequences of drunk driving is peer influence. People have difficult relationships between alcohol consumption and the risk of experiencing social consequences. Additionally, at a young age or believing that alcohol use is not harmful, peer influence, family experience, school factors, alcohol being a peer interaction and disapproval of the alcohol consumption or not drinking. Peer influence can be a problem when it comes to drunk driving, such as having friends who consume alcohol or who believe that drinking is acceptable. “High school students who use alcohol or other substances are five times more likely to drop out” (Hingson). Family experience can also be an issue when it comes to drunk driving, as heavy drinking by parents, siblings, or any parental supervision may be the reason for the onset of alcohol consumption. Peer friendships go viral due to the lack of peer influence. “Teenagers who drink alcohol have friends of the opposite sex who do the same thing” (Join Together Staff). Peer drinking is more than an influence. This could be from their own parents starting to drink. If children see their parents or friends drinking, they will think it is okay to drink. When children were little, they looked up to their parents and thought everything was acceptable. When little children saw an adult drinking, they thought it was normal to do so growing up.
