Arson is one of the oldest recognized crimes in the world. It is defined as the intentional and malicious burning of a structure or building (Montaldo). Arson can cost people their lives and the damage can be costly. In 2010, there were approximately 260,600 fires (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” nd). Many of these fires were started intentionally. These fires caused approximately 390 deaths, 1,340 injuries, and $1.2 billion in damages (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Most fires occurred outdoors, but most deaths, injuries, and losses occurred in structures, particularly homes (“Arson and Intentional Fires,” n.d.). Arson is considered a property crime by law enforcement, even though fires set by the arsonist can injure and kill many people. This article will discuss the history of arson and explain why arson is difficult to prove, why people commit it, and also provide specific case examples and suggestions on what people can do to reduce the risk of arson. arson.
