“A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry reveals symbolism in Mama's plant and also embraces the theme of the importance of family and the character's unrealized dreams. Mom's plant symbolizes her dream because, as she stated in Act 1, her dream was to own a two-story house with a garden and a large yard. Additionally, Mom's plant is linked to how she takes care of her family, because she takes care of her plants as much as she takes care of her family. She states in Act 1, Scene 1, that her plant doesn't get enough sunlight, but still manages to flourish. Therefore, just like her plants, Mom's family lives in a crowded "sunless" apartment that isn't as nice as she would like, but it's still a family she cares for unconditionally, despite their fashion current life. Additionally, one of the themes of this play is the importance of family. Mom is the center of the family and she strongly believes that family is very important.
