Graffiti: vandalism or art? Vandalism is an action involving the intentional demolition or damage of a public or private residence. “Art brings together the different branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature and dance. » (Holland) Graffiti can belong to both categories, but which one is it really defined? After researching and reading many articles, the conclusion people have come to is that graffiti is vandalism. It's one thing when someone is hired to draw or paint a mural on a building, but when all they do is draw letters that mean something to gang members that isn't defined as art. Vandalism is a difficult problem to stop. The causes can come from peer pressure or influence from peers, parents and family, as well as a materialistic society. Peer influence can lead to vandalism. It can characterize the attitudes, values and behaviors of adolescents, especially those who have dropped out of school and those who have family problems. Teenagers who participate in vandalism are usually members of a group. They have no specific goals and tend to indulge in impulsive behaviors when together, including scribbling and damaging public property. Teenagers are the generation that will become the future. They are exposed to many things that can affect their behavior, whether or not they are a good person. Nowadays, we see that there are many problems among adolescents, especially social problems. “Gangsters” and vandals are an example of some of these problems. The biggest problem among teenagers these days is vandalism. Vandalism is the willful abuse, damage or destruction of any part of another's property or common or shared property such as our community provisions, amenities or public property. Vandalism in...... middle of paper ......the country. Instead, unnecessary costs are incurred to clean up and repair the damage. Those who commit acts of vandalism seem to lack conscience and a sense of guilt for their actions. Vandalism should not be tolerated because it reflects the character of the people of this country. There are many reasons why people vandalize property. Much of it comes from gangs, but also from boredom, anger, defiance, allyship, peer pressure, hostility toward school, and people's desire for revenge. The state suggests that fines are the best solution for punishment, and I agree, but there are other sufficient ways to reduce the amount of vandalism. When teenagers commit acts of vandalism and are arrested, it is they who should be punished, not their parents. Vandals should be given more community service than fines, as this would have a positive effect on teenagers..
