In Shakespeare's play Macbeth, Macbeth leads to his own downfall. Macbeth's paranoia and guilt following his murders are major factors leading to his downfall. Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost and shows his fear by exclaiming: "Therefore, horrible shadow! So it’s an unreal mockery! (Shakespeare 3.4.128) This scene occurs after Macbeth kills Banquo and arouses people's suspicions. People are wary of his usurping behavior. This quote marks a major turning point since his inappropriate behavior alerts the nobility around him that something is wrong.
