Essay / Inequalities in The Kite Runner - 798
People who are not born into a wealthy family have many struggles throughout their lives. Especially during war, when they have no family or friends to turn to and are not allowed to cross the border. Tariq struggled to put a roof over his family's heads as the war continued while Afghanistan's richest fled or remained in their protected homes. Cars in Canada in the 21st century are a luxury. Almost every Canadian has one. The fact that Mariam has never touched or even seen a car is astonishing. Mariam is a lower class Afghan woman, so she can't go to school, so she won't be able to find work later in life, and will never have a house or car as nice as Jalils's. Because of a mistake Nana made by having a child with her boss, it negatively impacted her life in many ways. Tariq and his family left Kabul when he was a young adult to start a better life in Pakistan. They never went further than Peshawar. With discrimination comes class, people look down on others who live a different and harsher lifestyle than them. This shows that Amir has access to a good education, something lower class citizens cannot achieve. Because Hassan and Ali were not born into a wealthy family, they are forced to work to meet their basic needs. Hassan eventually learns to accept life as it has been given to him and does his best to clean the house while Amir leaves to continue his studies. This quote shows how rude Afghans, or anyone for that matter, can treat someone who doesn't. They do not follow their religion and do not live in their social class. They believe that it is rare for a person to move from being a servant to another family member, even if they are in love. The... middle of paper ... affects children like Hassan in Afghanistan. The racism continued when they went to America, where they will judge Americans and Americans will judge them. This shows that Amir is embarrassed to be Hassan's friend. He believes that Hassan is a lower class citizen due to his race and the fact that he is a "servant". He only plays with Hassan when no one is around, because he is afraid that someone else will judge him for talking to a Hazara. The next quote is where Amir and Baba visit the doctor in America to get a scan for Baba's cancer. In Kite Runner, Assef, the bully, treats Hassan very differently from Amir and the other boys in town. Hassan is a Pashtun “flat-nose” who, according to Assef, poses a threat to the purity of Afghanistan. He expresses his hatred towards anyone with the same past. Especially Hassan. Amir also treats Hassan differently.
