  • Essay / Analysis of the poem of I Heard a Fly Buzz - 1409

The speaker of the poem has died and remembers the last moments of his life. This can be seen when she says, “I heard the buzz of a fly – when I died”(1), in the first line of the poem. She does this from the first line to show the reader that she cannot change the imperfections that have occurred in her life. After making it known that she is dead, the speaker moves on to talk about the context of her death. She talks about the “quietness” (2) of the room and how peaceful and quiet it was. The speaker compares the calm of the room to the time between storms. The period “Between the risings of the storm”(4) is considered peaceful, but this is only an illusion because another storm is coming. This time between storms is a metaphor for the peace in life that can be shattered in a matter of moments.
