Essay / What is the summary of Abraham Lincoln and civil life...
I learned a lot of information about one of America's most profound presidents. I liked how the book brought Lincoln to a common man's point of view. Before reading this book, I viewed President Lincoln almost as a character in a folk tale, a hero from the history of America's past. I had almost imagined him as a god among men, while this book quickly changed that perception, showing some of his human flaws, such as being so uncomfortable around women that he often avoided completely their company. Another thing I really enjoyed about this book is how it guides the reader through the struggles that Lincoln went through early in his life, a part of his life that I had never heard of. It was very interesting and quite sad to read about Lincoln's detachment from his family and father. The book did a great job of describing his self-studies and motivation to improve himself through education. The text describes Lincoln's political journey, from his childhood to his presidency through his assassination. I found the difference between the way politics was conducted and the way it is done today very interesting. One specific example that really opened my eyes to the stark differences was when he threw a man over a fence after the man started heckling the man who was speaking. After reading this, I was shocked because if this happened today, Lincoln's political career would likely be over and charges would likely be filed against him. I enjoyed reading this book, it taught me a lot about the Civil War, but I loved even more that it described Lincoln's beginnings in such a period.
