    The results of a survey carried out showed that “the main motivating factor was the “pleasure of work” for 59% of those questioned. Examining the main motivator shows that motivation is more than just financial incentives, as employees enjoy meeting other needs than just money. This ties in with the equity theory that everyone wants to be treated well by others and employers need to understand and embrace this to truly succeed in business. Managers can use these theories to help them understand employee needs and how unique an individual is when communicating. with employees to find out what they can do to help them, for example by introducing different ways of working, such as flexible hours where the employee can choose when to work their core hours based on their personal life or sharing work where two or more people can separate a traditional job and its hours to allow them to have more control over their work allowing them to work to the best of their abilities, thus motivating them. Employee engagement could be used by employers to motivate retail employees.
