To begin with, the Party uses the concept of doublethink to eliminate individual thoughts, which in turn results in dehumanization. Doublethink is the mental ability to accept opposing opinions or beliefs. This allows citizens to avoid thought crime or, in other words, to preserve their intellectuality. The Party uses doublethink to manipulate citizens' thoughts to easily gain control. The party's slogans use the concept of doublethink to control citizens' thinking. They use “WAR IS PEACE[,] FREEDOM IS SLAVERY[, and] IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH” (18 Orwell). In reality, war is considered a terrible, violent and disastrous thing; changing meaning sows confusion among the population and reinforces their ignorance; thus, it causes individuals in Oceania to accept something they understand to be false. The Party can easily control citizens by reinforcing their ignorance.
