  • Essay / Prohibition in the 1920s - 1689

The Prohibition Era played a major role in the development of the United States as a whole. This changed the legal system. The Eighteenth Amendment, which dealt with Prohibition, made innocent civilians look like criminals just because they made, sold, or purchased alcohol. This also increased the need for policing, and even then it was still difficult to arrest every person who broke the law. But many people supported this amendment. For example, an organization known as the WCTU, or Woman's Christian Temperance Union, believed that one should never consume alcoholic beverages even before Prohibition was enacted. There were others who believed in what the WCTU stood for, but did not like the organization (tn.gov). They believed that women should not speak in public. Those who believed in prohibition were called “drys” and those who opposed it were called “wets” (Lapsansky-Werner page 229). The Eighteenth Amendment has affected culture today and played a major, albeit controversial, role in American history. Many reasons led to the adoption of the ban amendment. At that time, many people thought alcohol should be illegal. Many countries also believe that banning alcohol is important for their development. “Historians have shown, however, that national prohibition was not a coincidence, but rather the result of a century-long series of temperance movements deeply rooted in the American reform tradition” (ncbi.gov). Countries like Iceland, Finland, Norway, Tsarist Russia, Soviet Russia, Canadian provinces, and the federal government of Canada all had law similar or identical to the United States Ban Amendment. Additionally, New Zealand approved this law twice, but it was never passed (ncbi.gov).
