  • Essay / Are we teaching the right things, to the right people,...

Education, we hear this word quite frequently but what does it mean? The Miriam Webster Dictionary defines education as “the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process.” Everyone needs some education to succeed in life. The level and types of education may vary, but we all need the basics of reading, writing and mathematics to succeed in life and to be professional in the workplace. I view education as a step towards success in the future. Education ideally results in effective communication and a successful professional life. We have other ways to learn and new things to learn through technology. We must be educated to communicate professionally. Mr. Kohn states in the article that his wife is a successful and well-educated physician, but tends to have difficulty with proper grammar. Although she is probably a wonderful doctor, she can sometimes appear careless when someone in a position of authority makes simple grammatical errors in a conversation. These little grammatical errors may seem innocuous, and everyone makes mistakes from time to time. However, many small errors can be very distracting to someone trying to listen. Everyone needs to learn English (or their country's language) to become a professional. Society needs people who are successful in what they do because of their education. From doctors to teachers to secretaries to plumbers, we see different levels of education and different types of schooling, but these are all professions that society needs to function properly. All these people are educated and know how to do their job. Mr. Kohn emphasizes that "it would be a mistake to reduce schooling to professional preparation, if only because... middle of paper... the killings constitute a starting point for higher studies or another training. In conclusion, I think we should replace Mr. Kohn's question "What does it mean to be well educated?" with a more specific question: “Are we teaching the right things, to the right people, in the right way?” » I'm still a student and have so much to learn, but as my life goes on after college, I really hope to continue learning and be able to share what I know with others. I like Webster's dictionary definition of education as "the knowledge and development resulting from an educational process." It seems like a vague definition, but I think it's a very apt one. The words “educational process” make me think more of training than of schooling. I believe the main goal of education should be to prepare us for the life ahead of us, and that means fifty years or five minutes..
