Essay / A summary of the Sea Empress oil spill and the BP oil spill...
The Sea Empress oil spill and the BP oil spill caused major damage to their surroundings. In both cases, different species have been killed and threatened because of the now polluted waters. Industries, such as fishing, were shut down because of oil leaking into the water. However, the cleanup process for the two spills was drastically different and led to a completely different outcome. For the Sea Empress spill, people immediately devoted themselves to cleaning up, whereas in the case of the BP spill, the company simply neglected it and resorted to ignorant tactics such as throwing the waste into the sea in the hopes that they would suck up the oil, which didn't work as they hoped. As previously explained, the Sea Empress did not have a radically negative impact, but the BP oil spill left a huge scar on the environment and spread. To this day, oil is still found in the Bahamas and in the fat of the fish that inhabit them. BP itself was not responsible for the cleanup, as it paid the government to do all the cleanup. Many major oil companies operating in the Gulf of Mexico have distanced themselves from BP and criticized the design of the Macondo well, which was the initial reason for the oil spill. Due to the BP oil spill, many industries operating in the Gulf of Mexico were greatly affected. Since much of the marine life was affected, a number of oil fishing industries have been closed. Indeed, the oil spill caused mutations in the water, creating problems for future species. Fishing industries had to close their doors to avoid harming their buyers. Ironically, the oil that makes our lives so much more convenient is also gradually destroying the environment, the very Earth we live on. One of the biggest environmental concerns comes from oil spills. Oil spill is defined as “the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, particularly in marine areas, due to human activity, and constitutes a form of pollution”. Let's look at some examples of these oil spills.
