    Cancer, diabetes, heart disease: these are all illnesses that people believe are at least partially caused by stress. Studies have shown that cellular stress also leads to the development of these diseases. Although stress can cause various illnesses, I believe that all stress is positive in small doses. Research shows that some exposure to stress can develop resistance to stress, both mentally and physically. This is healthy because stress is inevitable in our changing world; It is better to resist stress than to face a stress attack one day in the future. Stress, as Hans Selye describes it, is a state that the body experiences when it reacts to various physical or emotional pressures. These various physical or emotional pressures are generally called “stressors.” Stressors can include anything from an irritating bright light to an environmental change; both can cause changes in our bodies that indicate stress. Unfortunately, with stress comes looming thoughts of cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. However, Selye's research has shown that stress comes with our body's adaptive responses. He invented the theory of “general adaptation syndrome” (GAS) which has three parts: the “alarm reaction”, the resistance phase and the exhaustion phase. The “alarm response” is characterized by tissue breakdown (tissue catabolism), hypoglycemia (hypoglycemia), erosion of the stomach or intestines and other symptoms: the body is in a state of alarm. The resistance stage is usually able to reverse these symptoms; this shows the adaptability of living organisms to cope with change.
