  • Essay / Analysis of the article “The Power of Habit” - 1765

“She knew that gambling could lead to trouble. » (Duhigg 247) if she knew that, then why lie to herself that she wasn't a drug addict. Furthermore, Angie said, “I know how to play” (Duhigg 249) if she knew how to play like she said, then why did she lose a lot of money. “It may seem irrational for anyone to believe that they can beat the house at a casino… However, a player can win consistently over time, if they memorize the complex formulas and odds that guide how each hand must be played. However, most players don't have the discipline or mathematical skills to beat the house. (Duhigg 249) As it is said that Angie didn't know how to play, so she lied to herself because she never mentions that she had math skills or that she memorized something when she played. In fact, Angie accepted the offers that Harrah's casino would make to her, such as limo rides, coupons, diamonds and other luxury items. I think Angie knew that not all of these luxuries were going to be free, especially when given often, at some point there would have to be a cost because nothing in this world is free. She lied to herself by not thinking there would be a cost/consequence to accepting these “gifts”. In all honesty, Angie lied to herself into believing that she was capable of recouping the money she had lost by imagining that these near misses were going to get her somewhere.
