The major theme of To Kill A Mockingbird is Man's Inhumanity to Man. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee explores the concept of injustice and its readers are introduced to a society where the social hierarchy dominated acts of humanity. We are often placed in situations where we see members of society being inhumane to each other in order to fit into the community and acting selfishly to save themselves. In the text, we are also commonly shown the racial discrimination that has become the norm of society. Due to the general acceptance of these behaviors, it is explicitly shown to all that the major theme Lee is trying to portray is "man's inhumanity to man". To Kill A Mockingbird presents an environment in which one must be inhumane towards another in order to become socially compatible. Maycomb has established a hierarchy where social compartmentalization is the way of life.
