Assessment is one of those words that has multiple meanings, but for this it is a process that evaluates what the learner knows, understands and how he used the knowledge acquired. The assessment can be formative or summative. Formative assessments are assessments administered at the beginning or during the program. However, this form of testing allows learning progress to be monitored during instruction. The summative, for its part, is global in nature and is given at the end of a course or teaching unit. This form of assessment is used to assess mastery and/or assign grades. Furthermore, evaluation is not limited to the school environment; it is also used in the professional field. Assessments can be valuable tools when used correctly. Here in the Bahamas, like anywhere else in the world, assessments are administered in both vocational and educational departments. The question remains: are the tools administered correctly and are the results used wisely? According to the texts on evaluation, their role is to examine to what extent the learning outcome has been achieved. Therefore, there should be certain indicators on where attention should be focused in order to achieve the desired results. Take the BGCSE for example, for years results have indicated that a large number of students have not mastered the information assessed by this exam. This sends a clear warning of the need for intervention that will result in a change in recurring outcomes. This shows that BGCSE results are not being used to find strategies that can contribute to more positive outcomes. Diagnostic tests...... middle of article......
