  • Essay / Victims of Prejudice - 855

Everywhere we go, we see people who experience prejudice from other people. Prejudice is an act of injustice towards others based on stereotypes and other unreliable data. This creates embarrassment, hatred and fear in some people every day. Nowadays, it is incredible to think that people still suffer from ignorance and prejudice. Through these articles “Black Men and Public Space” by Brent Staples and “Occupied Los Angeles: Eviction” by James Butler, it becomes clear that prejudice creates negative feelings in the hearts of victims, which cause them to fear and hate . I completely agree that the author, Brent Staples, was the victim of prejudice because he is a black man walking down the street late at night. Some people are prejudiced because of the color of a person's skin. In the article “Black Men and the Public Space,” Brent Staples stated: “My first victim was a well-dressed white woman, probably in her twenties. . . I walked towards the avenue behind her, there seemed to be a discreet, incendiary distance between us. This was not the case. She cast a worried look. To her, the young black man – six feet tall with a beard and wavy hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket – seemed menacingly close. After a few more glimpses, she quickened her pace and soon began running in earnest. Within seconds, she disappeared down a side street. This passage clearly shows an act of prejudice. Although the perpetrator was an educated black man, a young white woman immediately assumed that any black man walking in a pleasant neighborhood late at night could be dangerous. According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau, there was a huge stir among people. the...... middle of paper ......e quickly walks past me and closes the front door, and comes back standing where she must have been looking at me. I was surprised, embarrassed and furious at the same time. Although I am a well-dressed, professional black woman, a family I often come to to support their small business, prejudges me because of the color of my skin. I believe it is time for the law to do something about the discrimination and injustice that exists between people. The prejudices that some people still experience in everyday life make them fear and hate. In modern life where all races live and work together as one big family, no one should have to worry about prejudice. For this reason, government officials should interpret human rights law as it is written, not circumvent it, so that people are free to exercise their rights as citizens without persecution or prejudice..
