This aspect is the “double-edged sword of ecotourism”. In this chapter, Stanford expresses the positives and negatives of ecotourism. Ecotourism is a form of tourism that involves visiting fragile and untouched natural areas and in this case the main reason is to observe gorillas. Ecotourism has its good and bad sides. This is a good thing because poor communities that live near monkey habitats can have a source of income. These areas are really poor and through ecotourism they can earn around $9,000 per month. However, these areas may not exactly be the safest. Stanford cites a 1999 cross-border attack by rebel groups in Rwanda in which eight ecotourists were murdered and the attack deterred tourists from going there for several months. Another negative aspect of ecotourism is its impact on monkeys. Although many monkeys who live in these habituation zones and have tourists coming and going, the monkeys develop very high levels of stress. When humans move too fast or make noise, monkeys become stressed and may flee. Additionally, increased stress levels weaken their immune systems, making them more vulnerable to illness. Stanford ends this chapter by saying that ecotourism is inevitable if countries are too poor to support their populations and that "the monkeys will have to live with the results" (190). In
