Essay / Diffusion Laboratory - 670
PurposeThe goal of this laboratory was to see first-hand the diffusion of a substance through a selectively permeable membrane. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration until the two concentrations are equal, or as you might call it more professionally, equilibrium. This concept is one that we are currently studying in depth in biology class. Procedure We split into groups of two each, making sure we had the following equipment for the laboratory: graduated cylinder, plastic sandwich bag, solution of starch, twist tie, 500 A 1 ml beaker, an iodine solution, a pair of glasses and an apron (for the person handling the iodine solution). Then we would put the starch solution, the right amount of course, into the plastic sandwich bag and secure it with the twist. tie. Then, one person from our group put on the protective equipment (goggles and apron) to handle the iodine solution carefully. We would pour 250 ml of water into a 500 ml beaker, followed by 15 drops of iodine. After that we would place the s...
