Essay / n recent decades, society has become particularly interested in robotics. Shows such as The Jetsons predict that the future will be a world where robotics play an everyday role in life. Furthermore, it has inspired many people to work towards this future. Every day society is getting closer and closer to this futuristic world. Robotics is a rapidly evolving field that has the potential to help society in positive ways. In 2005, military-funded research was conducted by Boston Dynamics to develop a robot capable of working alongside soldiers in combat. The name of this robot was fittingly BigDog. Its 240-pound frame, shaped like a medium-sized dog, is capable of carrying 340 pounds of gear (“Boston Dynamics”). The sensors provide it with information that allows it to walk on slopes of up to thirty-five degrees and in various terrains such as snow, ice, mud, rubble and shallow water. It can even absorb the impact of a human trying to knock it over ("Boston Dynamics"). However, the main problem was that BigDog was too noisy and still not ready to work in unison with the military units. That's why Boston Dynamics developed BigDog's older brother, the LS3. The LS3 is much quieter, can carry up to 400 pounds, listen to voice commands, follow a soldier and, after a fall, get up without assistance ("DARPA's AlphaDog"). It can navigate around obstacles when needed, which is particularly useful in an urban environment, and is capable of traveling 20 miles without refueling ("Boston Dynamics"). This would be an incredibly useful unit for the future as it would not only reliably transport equipment, but it could also transport injured soldiers who cannot walk under their own power. LS3 is expected to be deployed with the US Marines sometime in 2...... middle of paper ......utomaton/robotics/humanoids/aldebaran-robotics-nao-robot-autism-solution-for-kids> ."
