Essay / The Odyssey - 636
Homer's Odyssey is the story of a hero and his long journey home. 3000 years ago, the author Homer was an ancient Greek author of two epics: The Iliad and The Odyssey. Despite the fact that he was physically blind, he saw the psychological makeup of what men should be. Homer was an insightful writer who redefine what a hero truly is. He distinguishes between a hero and a villain: heroes use intelligence before strength while villains start with violence. Homer's epic The Odyssey illustrates that heroes ultimately prevail over villains through tact and intelligence. A hero was once considered someone who was physically powerful and virtually invulnerable to any difficult situation they faced. In reality, no man can be truly insurmountable against all forces. Homer redefines the character of a hero as follows: brains ultimately prevail over brawn. In other words, through intelligence, violence can be overcome. The first hero of the Odyssey is Ulysses. He participated in the war for 10 long years and remained at sea for another 10 years. During his journey he was faced with dilemma after dilemma, the first problem being the Trojan War. If the Greeks had simply used brute force to fight Troy, the war would have been incessant. However, Odysseus used intellectual power to imagine the Trojan horse. With the Trojan horse, they penetrated the walls of Troy and conquered the kingdom. Penelope, Odysseus' faithful wife, is yet another hero. She remained faithful to Odysseus for 20 years, despite his eternal fight against the suitors of Ithaca. Despite her anger at the suitors, she follows the customs of welcome. Not wanting to remarry, she extends time by weaving a shroud for Odysseus. By the time she finished, she theoretically... middle of paper ... and pseudonym "Nohbody". Here, Homer illustrates that brain power ultimately wins over brute force. Homer's Odyssey only brings a new twist to modern society's idea of heroes and villains. Heroes no longer need to be muscular but able to think logically. The villains are rude and forceful, trying to solve every problem with violence. A living hero in my life is my father. He selflessly took care of my family. It also instills moral lessons in us to improve our lives. Putting our family first rather than himself ultimately makes him a hero. The bad guys in life include bullies from different schools. Bullies provoke weaker people simply because they are easy targets. They start with violence instead of using their diplomatic skills. The Odyssey clearly illustrates the difference between heroes and villains. The brain finally surpasses the muscles.
