Sugar Beef Complex Farming and Processing System is extremely harmful to the environment. Growing processed sugar requires clearing land and burning wood or fossil fuels. This caused the destruction of the Florida Everglades, a smog problem in Antwerp, and such gradual deforestation in the Canary Islands that the government could not even regulate it (Robbin 188). Likewise, the beef production system has negative consequences on the environment. Robbins stated that “animal production is one of the most environmentally damaging and wasteful forms of food production the world has known” (187). Livestock consume 80 percent of the grain produced in the United States and consume half of the nation's water. It also requires enormous amounts of land to grow animal feed and for pasture, which causes deforestation, threatens local wildlife, and has historically caused the extinction of buffalo (192-193, 197). Therefore, the sugar-beef complex is detrimental to the environment due to its high environmental production cost to our fragile and limited natural resources. Unfortunately, due to the increasing globalization of fast food and capitalism's demand for ever-higher consumption, these industries are expanding and generating exponentially more consumption.
