They don't have much air on the ship because there were a lot of slaves and there isn't much air for them to breathe all of them, they were all on the low deck of the ship. The terrible Middle Passage caused the death of all the slave victims. Olaudah Equiano was born in 1745 in Eboa, Guinea, now Nigeria. He was a chief's son, and he was kidnapped and enslaved at the age of 11, put on a slave ship. He described his first time when he arrived on the coast, it was the sea and a slave ship. "I now wished that the last friend, death, would relieve me; but soon, to my great sorrow, two of the white men offered me something to eat; and, as I refused to eat, one of them held me fast by the hands, and placed me, I believe, on the windlass and tied my feet, while the other whipped me severelyā€¯ (Equiano, The Middle Passage).
