  • Essay / The negative effects of deforestation - 893

Humans depend on trees in many ways for their daily lives. Trees provide food, shelter, medicine and a new supply of oxygen. In 2014, thirty percent of the planet was covered in forests, but this number is rapidly declining. Due to deforestation, the Earth loses tracts of forest the size of Panama every year. Responsibility for this situation lies primarily with loggers who cut down trees for timber and farmers who cut down trees to make way for agriculture. Loggers and farmers should end deforestation to prevent species extinction and avoid extreme climate change. When people cut down trees, it destroys the habitats of millions of plants and animals that may not survive to find another home and eliminates potential medicines. In a study conducted to investigate the impact of deforestation on birds, the experiment "resulted in a decrease in suitable habitat of between 78% and 93% for the Atlantic Forest birds included here" (Loiselle et . Since trees affect all living parts of the environment, if trees disappeared, the decline in suitable habitat for Atlantic forest birds would appear similar for most other forest species. If between 78 and 93 percent of forest animals disappeared, it would impact humans due to a drastic decrease in the amount of food available. After a forest is destroyed, "only 50 to 80 percent of plant species can return to logged or modified areas, and many animal species will not survive the transition" (Environmental News Service). Although replanting trees has advantages, it is not the same thing because not all the biodiversity of plant species will grow back. This affects animals when habitats disappear, they do not adapt to another...... middle of paper ......ete. Internet. April 21, 2014. Moraes, EC, Sergio H. Franchito, and V.
