Essay / A career: Anesthesiology - 1488
The career field I am studying is anesthesiology. The reason I am studying anesthesiology is so I can learn about a possible future career field for me. I chose anesthesiology because it seemed like an interesting career choice. It seems like it would be cool to be one. This is the reason why I am writing this article if I want to become an anesthesiologist. Attempts at anesthesia have been around for as long as people have been performing surgery, no matter how primitive it may be. The first anesthetics were sleeping pills or narcotics, which dulled the senses and induced sleep. Some of the first anesthetics were belladonna, a type of plant, alcohol, marijuana, strimson, mandrake, and opium. Although all of these products have provided some pain relief, none of them guarantee sedation. There have also been attempts to use hypnosis to put people to sleep. In the 1840s, two anesthetics were regularly used: opium and alcohol. The only downside to both of these is that they had negatives to go along with the positives. Two of those negatives were dependency, and neither of them could usually alleviate the pain completely. If you took doses large enough to get the full effect, it could just as easily kill you. But everything changed when Dr. William Morton soaked a sponge in ether and placed it over his patient's mouth and nose, rendering him unconscious. When the patient woke up, he said he had no memory of the operation and felt no pain. This discovery forever changed the world of anesthesia. There are approximately thirty thousand anesthesiologists employed in the United States. The employment trend is expected to increase by 18% by 2022. Due to this growth trend, an increase of one hundred and twenty-three thousand three hundred jobs in this career field is expected by 2022. ...... middle of paper .. ..... There is also the problem of long working hours. You could have simply worked a long twelve hour day and then been called back due to an emergency. For most jobs, this won't happen. Additionally, anesthesiologists work up to ninety hours per week. In most jobs, you only work about 45 hours a week. Then, if you get a job at a surgery center, you won't need to work very long hours, but most surgery centers like this want experienced workers, so you will most likely need to start at a hospital where you have to work. these long hours. This is going to be a difficult decision to make as to whether I want to pursue this career. I don't think I would still want to do this career after my research, it takes a long time to get the training and you have to work long hours. I think I would rather try a career with less training and shorter hours.
