  • Essay / Discussion Paper on Working Together - 713

Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; staying together is progress; working together is a success. In my classroom, my goal is not only to teach my students, but also to have them interact and work with each other on a daily basis. I want them to develop life-long skills such as respect, communication, teamwork, critical thinking and leadership. The start of the year begins with a discussion about respect and what that means in our classroom and in our school. I teach math and science and regularly incorporate group work into my class. My room is equipped with round tables which encourage interaction between students. My principle is that we must all learn to work together to help each other. We are all human beings capable of mistakes and we are not perfect. Therefore, we must be forgiving, caring, they communicate with each other and thus learn to give and receive with each other. I'm not saying there aren't arguments but they know that in my class they have to work together. A single person on the team making the decision is not an option. In science we have lab groups and each person in the group has a job. Tasks are decided by team members and one student cannot be the leader of each laboratory. Each person receives a card with the name of the laboratory job with a description of their job responsibilities. For example, one person has the job of “encouraging.” Their job is to monitor everyone on the team to make sure they are doing their own job. They also take responsibility for praising and affirming a job well done. They record comments and actions that demonstrate positive interpersonal communications. Lab jobs encourage responsibility and ensure that students are focused on the lab. It also enables self-confidence and growth in students.
