  • Essay / Prayer in Public Schools - 1230

About 87% of Americans are religious. This means that refusing prayer in public schools would amount to denying a majority of students the right to religious freedoms. According to the Congress, students can pray freely outside of teaching hours at school. It would be a violation of the First Amendment to ban prayer in public schools. This is why prayer in public schools should be allowed. Currently, prayer is permitted in public schools if it is done silently and for oneself. “A student can come to class early, sit quietly, and pray in silence” (Robinson). Students are also allowed to organize religious/prayer groups at school, clothing representing a specific religion is permitted at school, as well as having discussions about religious aspects in a classroom environment. This shows that nowadays students are able to pray at school and there is no problem with it. They can pray alone during lunch, before or after school, and during the moment of silence following the Pledge of Allegiance. The reason it is not practical for students to recite state-written prayers is that there are so many diverse religions that it would be unfair to say a Christian prayer when there is someone from Jewish faith in the classroom. A state-mandated prayer may also be considered offensive to people of different religions and a violation of religious freedom. “They find state-sponsored Christian prayer deeply offensive and an attack on their freedom of religion” (Robinson). This is why students of different religions would not participate in prayer and would then have to be excused due to their different beliefs. Therefore, due to the number of religions, having many prayers would be more practical, ...... middle of paper ...... Should not include more religion in the school curriculum.
