  • Essay / Inequality In Just Mercy - 1441

Women, for example, who could not afford health care, suffered intensely in bad situations; for example, when their children died suddenly (Stevenson 233). It's bad enough to lose a child after childbirth, but like the woman described in this book, many poor women often have enormous obstacles to overcome on top of giving birth. In Just Mercy, there was a story about a family who lost their home and job to a storm, causing a number of different problems. During this series of events, the mother discovers that she is pregnant. Due to lack of prenatal care throughout her pregnancy, she gave birth to a stillborn child. Since they had no money to pay for medical expenses, they decided to leave the child's death among family members. Unfortunately, after police discovered the buried child, the mother was arrested for murder and it took months of testing to prove that the mother had not actually killed her own child. It is sad to see this type of situation happening all over the United States. Government money is invested in places like prisons and diverted from funding things like medical insurance. Many people, including these women, suffer because they cannot receive the proper medical care they need.
