  • Essay / Integrate the nursing metaparadigm with the...

    I. IntroductionThe purpose of this article is to present a personal belief about the nursing metaparadigm and to incorporate it with that of Jean Watson's Human Caring Theory.II. Personal Belief on the ParadigmEach person's needs must be recognized, respected, and met if they are to achieve wholeness. The environment must be in tune with this wholeness for healing to occur. Healing must be total or holistic if health is to be restored or maintained. And the nurse-patient relationship is the very foundation of nursing care (Conway et al 2011; Johnson, 2011). The Theory recognizes above all a person's needs. It creates an environment conducive to healing. It addresses and works on restoring and maintaining overall health rather than just specific parts or aspects of the patient's body or personality. And this is only possible through a positive healing relationship between patient and nurse (Conway et al, Johnson).III. Origin of Watson's Theory Watson conceived her theory of human benevolence while teaching at the University of Colorado from 1975 to 1979 (Conway et al, 2011). This evolved from her personal views on nursing and merged with her learning and experience from her doctoral studies in education, clinical and social psychology. With the publication of her first book, Jean Watson develops the first ideas of her theory and proposes 10 “carative” factors. Her current theory was published in 1985, after which she developed the corresponding nursing curriculum. During these years, Watson also traveled extensively in Asia and Australia while practicing. The dominant influences in nursing at the time were those of Carl Rogers, Florence Nightingale, and Leininger.
