  • Essay / My Mission - 1022

Ask any military member how we came to serve and you will get a story. Without a doubt, our anecdotes will begin by evoking our childhood. We'll share how we grew up, our important influences, and maybe even some key events that helped us fulfill our future calling. We'll continue by sharing some "war stories" from joining and may even describe how what we do contributes to the mission. Although each story may have similar elements, all are unique and this is mine. Like many military personnel, my story begins with my family. Born and raised in Rochester, New York, I had little to do with the military as a child. Although my parents' families shared a rich tradition of military service, including my father's eight years of service in the United States Marine Corps before I was born; I had absolutely no exposure outside of these links. In fact, even now I could barely relate to anyone in much of their military careers beyond the military, their jobs, and the major conflicts in which they served. However, the spirit of their service permeated every aspect of my life growing up. My father's time in the Navy was well spent as he raised us with a fierce dedication to discipline, standards, and respect. He instilled in us a sense of duty and the inherent expectation to help around the house, maintain good grades, stay physically fit, and participate in extracurricular activities. He has chosen to stay involved in our activities, either through coaching, Cub Scout leadership or simply participating. My mother, an accomplished teacher, was the primary housekeeper and equally supportive. My parents' sense of service had a great impact on me and led me to get involved in coaching programs, youth mentoring and school service organizations. The ones most involved...... middle of paper ......they fly, keep our networks running, and power the jets on the runway. Finally, we deliver a complete fitness mission capable of keeping our force fit to fight. Each of these mission sets represents fundamental needs both at home and in a deployed environment. Indirectly, our services affect the retention of Air Force families, as it is commonly understood "while we recruit the member, we keep the family." From daycare to youth programs, bowling alleys or golf courses; our job is to help military families feel welcomed and cared for while their loved one selflessly serves their country. I am proud of my service; incredibly grateful for the experiences I've had since joining the Air Force and I truly feel like what I'm doing is making a difference. Having not known exactly what I would do when I grew up, I honestly can't think of anything else I would rather do..
