    My great-grandparents are 78 and 87, grew up in a completely different era, and did not discuss or even think about same-sex couples, much less marriages. They were raised in a time when LGBT couples didn't "exist" and if they did, it wasn't shown. LGBT couples existed primarily in private rather than in public. The period in which they grew up followed what society considered the norm and rarely went against it. Well, that's what I assumed because of their age and religious views. I would like to say that the assumptions I made were completely wrong. After having a long conversation with my grandparents, I discovered that they did not conform to society's opinions and expectations. My grandmother had gotten pregnant out of wedlock and never married the man, she ended up marrying my grandfather. I mention this because it was definitely frowned upon to get pregnant out of wedlock and then marry another man. My grandmother also worked several jobs in the medical field and was very educated. This was definitely not normal for African American women or even men during her time due to the racism that was occurring. After listening to all his stories, it brightened my eyes.
