Essay / Effects of Genetic Modification - 697
Genetic modification is attributed to the manipulation of DNA by humans to change the fundamental characteristics of plants and animals. The process of genetic modification involves taking genetic material from one species and placing it into another, to enable the production of a new quality in a crop or animal. Qualities such as: new color, new shape and new size. “In North America and Europe, the value and impact of genetically modified food crops have become topics of intense debate, provoking reactions ranging from unbridled optimism to fervent political opposition. » (Ackerman, JA, 2010) Some people believe that genetic modification is an essential tool for solving the problem of starvation. On the other hand, some people think about genetic modification because it has enormous negative effects on human health and the environment. Genetically modified foods are all around us, used daily by many people, even though they cause dangerous health problems. Genetically modified foods affect human health and have enormous negative impacts on the environment. Genetic modifications are very harmful to human beings; this has a huge negative effect on the health of animals and humans. Manipulating genes in crops and animals can harm health. “Animal toxicity studies have shown that genetically modified foods can have toxic effects on multiple organs and systems” (Arvanitoyannis, 162, 2011). These studies concluded that genetically modified foods are dangerous and could become one of the most harmful problems in the world. According to Arvanitoyannis' research, genetically modified foods cause some common toxic effects such as: hepatic, pancreatic, renal or reproductive effects and can alter hematological, biochemical and immunological parameters...... middle of paper ... ...f human beings!. Additionally, genetic modification negatively affects the environment: "Genetically modified corn and soy appear in everything from high fructose corn syrup to soy milk; there is no way to remove them from the food chain now. » (Hatch, RH, 2010). All these impacts must be taken into consideration to avoid disasters. The process of genetic modification can ultimately harm animals, plants, and any other living organisms. After all this research has shown how dangerous genetic modifications are to all human beings and how they affect their health, serious action must be taken. As David (2014) defines it, “research shows toxicity in animals that predicts serious medical consequences in humans with long-term exposure.” Serious government action should be taken to avoid human health problems and to avoid negative impacts on the environment..
