Essay / The challenges of following your dreams and immigrating
A new white raceAs an immigrant and divorced mother of two who comes to a foreign country in search of a better future for my children , I ignored the complexity of the factors necessary to achieve my dreams. Moving from a socialist culture to an individualistic culture, being the latter, the culture my children are more likely to adopt, I realized the importance of building a strong family and began looking for possible factors that could give me a clear vision on how to achieve my quest. The first factor I found interesting was the high percentage of single-parent families and the virtual disappearance of long-term marriages. I come from a country where long-term marriages are still prevalent, which is why this observation shocked me the most. Another observation was the high percentage of interracial marriages in Los Angeles, where I live, and the possible connection to the low percentage of racism in that state. Last fall, I read “Southland,” a book by Nina Revoyr. The reading had an unexpected impact on me, certainly because of the way in which some controversial social issues were presented. These issues had a negative impact at that time as I was struggling to make a difficult decision regarding my personal life. After dating someone of a different ethnic background for three years, he asked me to start a family with him. My first answer was no because I was afraid that I might experience some sort of discrimination from his family or that he might experience rejection from my family. Parallel to my situation, my friend who had emigrated from Mexico was recovering from a five-year relationship she had with a Mexican-American man who decided to end his relationship with her because he had married an American woman. My...... middle of paper ......Finally, I am really satisfied with my thoughts and findings. After my research, I was left with a strong desire to know more about sociology which studies the mass behavior of humans which is a puzzle, and how this science can be an important tool to better understand all social problems that we encounter. a company. However, there are other interesting questions that struck me during my writing, and I would like to discover them someday. As an immigrant, I know I still have my country, but what is happening to African Americans? How do they feel about still being a minority in their own country? Does color really not matter? Do most American teenagers expect to marry Asian women? We know the definitions like: African American, Hispanic American, but are Asian Americans the new substitute for the new white race ??
