What really happened at the Roman Colosseum? It was a beautiful and terrible place, full of death and glory and victory. But the Colosseum was also the center and heart of Roman culture. It was the place where gladiators could win big or lose everything, obviously their lives. What is the Roman Colosseum? The Roman Colosseum was a place of death and fun, thousands of gladiators lost their lives fighting. But they also sent slaves, prisoners, animals, and even women into battle to save their lives. The Colosseum was built around 2,000 years ago in the heart of Rome. It hosted the gruesome, deadly games of gladiator combat. People who fought could achieve glory, fame, and wealth, but if they lost, they would likely lose not only the game but their lives as well. Many famous battles have taken place. Many animals also lost their lives, more than 1,000,000 animals died fighting for their lives as well as a large number of warriors. When spectators came to the Colosseum, the nobles were always seated in the front rows while the rest were ordinary men. Sometimes the judges added water to the arena to make the fights more seaworthy. The Colosseum owes its name to a monk who read a prophecy. It's sad; “When the Colosseum falls, Rome will fall” and “When Rome falls, so will the world”. How was the Colosseum built? Construction of the Colosseum began in 70 AD and was completed 10 years later, in 80 AD. It is 175 feet tall with a perimeter of 1788 feet wide. It was built in the heart of ancient Rome with numerous tunnels and pulley systems to bring who or what into the battle zone. It also had 80 vaulted entrances. The Colosseum is so large that it could easily accommodate a football field. It is 513 feet wide and 620 feet long on the outside and 180 feet wide and ...... middle of paper ...... gladiator ore. Although the Colosseum was a place where slaves or warriors could gain glory and wealth, it was also a place where they could lose their lives.
