Essay / The Monster Child - 646
When a child is born, he knows very few things. He can cry, make random noises, perform vital functions essential to his survival, and eat. When Frankenstein “awakened” his creation, she knew how to stand and watch. We know this because that's all he does before Frankenstein escapes from his hideousness. In fact, the only thing that made Frankenstein's creation act like a child was his emotions. Although the ability to walk and learn remained in its mind, the monster's mind was essentially a blank sheet of paper that could be relied upon to determine its personality type. It takes years for a child to be able to speak. This creature only took a few months. The development of a child is very different from that of the monster, but even if the monster is seen as a child whose purpose remains shrouded in mystery, should he be treated as such or should he be treated harshly since he is is it an anatomical abomination? The monster is awakened by lightning, he gets up and looks at his creator, Victor. Because Victor has distanced himself from his creation, very little is known about his initial actions. However, using textual evidence, it can be concluded that he had the ability to walk, run, maintain balance, and use his arms for violent purposes. Later in the story, we learn that it was not a matter of committing murder. In fact, the monster says, “Child, what does this mean? I have no intention of harming you; listen to me. (102) This means that his moral sense has developed, but not to the point of being a law-abiding citizen. When children are born, they are completely incapable of raising their heads, let alone committing homicide. This fundamental difference between human children and the monster is like a valley between the two; each having its o...... middle of paper ......ences if a moral compass is not present in the one who judges. In conclusion, the difference between the development period of a child and that of the monster is very different and almost not alike. The fact that the monster had a childish mind made no difference to his treatment because his figure was so horrifying that people automatically thought he was an evil being and treated him as such. This applies to most judgments, as many individuals seem to judge almost everyone they encounter, whether they know them or not. The United States government does this even when searching for terrorist suspects. It remains to be seen whether this is a moral thing to do at this point. However, it should be remembered that no matter what another peer looks like, they should be treated with respect and grace simply because it is a compassionate approach..
