Essay / A review of the Dogme language method...
Originally, Dogme is a filmmaking technique created in 1995 by a group of Danish directors when they were trying to create more successful films with less preparation. Meddings and Thornbury (2009, 104) state that "Dogma requires that no props be introduced into the authentic film location...and the exclusive use of a hand-held camera." Eventually, this technique was adopted as a teaching method, because sometimes teachers may face lack of materials, which may result in loss of electricity source, which could affect a lesson based on listening or at least allocate photocopying equipment for students. When a teacher is asked to teach a listening lesson, for example, one of the first things they need is a CD player. Being reliant on this type of equipment, the teacher would not be able to continue the lesson if the required “deluxe” recorder was not available. Meddings and Thornbury (2009) The view of inexperienced teachers that the Dogme teaching method is completely opposed to the use of teaching materials should be corrected. According to Meddings and Thornbury (2009), a teacher using the Dogme English Language Teaching method should benefit from all the teaching facilities acquired. However, these facilities should not be the main source of teaching dominating the lessons, the teacher should be responsible for leading the lessons. In other words, course books are not excluded within the Dogme approach but they are used according to certain principles identical to all ELT approaches. The principles of the Dogme ELT approach: A Dogme ELT course is primarily based on conversations where a course begins by eliciting a few key points to be discussed by the teacher and learners. According to Thornbury (2005), learning objectives can be achieved by using courses...... middle of paper ...... motivated to learn a language. Therefore, English teaching methods seem to be designed with emphasis on student motivation. As Thornbury (2005) argues, regarding Dogme ELT, the motivational element is likely to be covered since the learners' voice has been given a place in the classroom. In other words, students' ideas and needs are treated as a fundamental part of the process. Additionally, teacher motivation tends to be as important as student motivation. There have been many debates about the application of Dogma as a method of teaching. An online report from Oxford states that some contributors argue that Dogme ELT should be considered as an additional method. As this applies, various possible activities can be covered in class. However, this cannot be considered a standalone approach..
